Training

Railway Experience course

We have developed this highly practical programme in partnership with the Romney, Hythe and Dymchurch Railway based on the Kent Coast. Now in its seventh year, the course provides delegates with opportunities to observe and experience activities and apply their skills on a working one-third sized passenger railway operating to standard gauge rules and regulations. However, despite the lightness of the infrastructure and the size of the trains, the basic operating principles are those used on railways throughout the world.

Who should attend?

The course is designed for all levels of staff including managers, engineers, trainers, and graduates who require a greater understanding of the operational railway. The course is suitable for those entering the rail industry at any level as it provides an awareness of industry requirements, enhancing effectiveness and contribution.

What you will learn

On completion of the programme, delegates will be able to:

  • Demonstrate an understanding of signalling history and principles, from Time Interval working to Track Circuit Block.

  • Demonstrate an ability to use the signalling to control train movements.

  • Conduct a track inspection and provide accurate feedback and high level faults diagnosis.

  • Define the requirements for preparing for, and managing emergencies.

  • Solve a practical logistical puzzle by shunting vehicles and signalling train movements.

  • Demonstrate the use of effective radio protocols for train control.

  • Practice the skills and techniques required when managing an emergency situation.

  • Recognise the issues of Signal Passed at Danger (SPADs), define the various SPAD categories and understand the appropriate mitigation measures.

  • Identify opportunities for maintenance and renewal and understand the implications surrounding planning of possessions

The benefits

As the Romney, Hythe and Dymchurch Railway is a working railway with heavy seasonal traffic, this programme is delivered only between September and April.

The benefits to the delegates are that the programme can be tailored to meet particular requirements, and that individual attention can be maintained throughout, the combination of theory and applying skills learnt by working on the railway making this a unique and effective learning experience.

The course trainers provide a wealth of experience across both National and Underground rail systems, allowing the principles being explained and demonstrated to be aligned to the delegates' own workplaces, situations and experiences.
