Rail research

We have undertaken numerous research projects for RSSB and Network Rail, including SPAD risk management, the assessment of passenger behaviour, the review of driver standards and assessment of the human factors impacting level crossing safety.

How we can help

Our research work is generally focused around risk management by providing an understanding of what influences people to behave as they do.

Our detailed understanding of human behaviour and the physical characteristics of users support our work to address the major risk areas within the railway industry.

We have extensive knowledge of the human factors influencing signals passed at danger (SPADS), the risks at level crossings and of managing operator performance.

What are the benefits?

This knowledge supports the design of an interface or environment to reduce the potential for human error and to improve usability and performance.

Recent projects

  • Development of the human factors SPAD hazard checklist for Network Rail

  • Development of the Route Drivability Tool (RDT) to assess the level of workload experienced by a train driver along a route

  • Numerous assessments of the human factors that affect the safety of level crossings

  • Human factors assessment of passenger trespass onto railway lines from stations

  • Support to the development of workload tools to assess train driver workload.
