Fleet performance

Fleet maintenance, monitoring and performance

Effective performance of traction and rolling stock depends on proper monitoring and in-service maintenance. Activities ranging from routine checks to heavy overhaul need careful specification and implementation.

How we can help

  • Development and implementation of a maintenance approach, such as Reliability Centred Maintenance and Integrated Logistics Services

  • Development of methods for maintenance management, based on RAMS - Reliability, Availability, Maintainability and Safety

  • Development and implementation of damage detection and diagnostic systems.

What are the benefits?

  • An integral approach with reliability, availability, maintenance and safety of rolling stock brought into balance with costs

  • Tangible improvements in the operational reliability and availability of rolling stock - in most cases lowering overheads at the same time

  • Reduced delays - resulting in improved financial performance

  • Predictable performance at known cost through cost-effective modifications and better efficiency in the operating processes.

Recent projects

  • A major UK train operator needed front line support with real time defect reporting to depots. We provided inspectors to carry out defect audits both at depot and on trains in-service through inspection and discussion with the train crew. Defects including toilets, doors, catering equipment, air conditioning, cleanliness and grafitti are entered into a bespoke database for onward transmittal to the maintenance depot. This means that in-service corrective action can be taken, depots receive advanced warning of defects and are better prepared to deal with them quickly. This enables the operator to manage its performance contract with the third party maintainer effectively.

  • Lloyd's Register provides the daily inspection resource for a major UK train operator to record the condition of its train and station assets. A bespoke SQL database was developed for the storage, management and reporting of the recorded data. This enables the operator to report the condition of its train and station assets to its franchising authority on a regular basis and helps ensure that passengers are presented with a clean and operational service. At the end of the franchise period, the operator will be able to demonstrate that the asset has been maintained and is in a suitable and known condition for the incoming operator.

  • Commissioned by the largest train operating company in the Netherlands, we participated in a project to improve the reliability of its operations. We developed a system to categorise malfunctions and then devised and implemented a series of improvement programmes. Benefits of the project for our client were: improved efficiency, reduced costs and increased passenger satisfaction.
