About us

Marine

Our Marine business works with clients to help lower their risks and improve their safety and business performance through a broad range of marine services. We are committed to delivering innovative and value-added solutions to the marine industry, addressing risks to safety, the environment and business performance.

We are a leading provider of classification services around the world, helping to ensure that internationally recognised quality standards are maintained throughout the life of a vessel from construction to decommissioning.  We provide much more than traditional classification surveying services. There is an increasing need for the provision of sophisticated risk management and support to shipowners and ship managers. Worldwide, Lloyd’s Register provides management systems, fuel oil quality testing, environmental services, vetting and training products and services to support our marine clients.

Our Marine business covers three principal areas: classification, statutory survey and technical services.

  • Classification: sets and maintain standards of quality and reliability. To be classed a ship must conform to Lloyd’s Register Rules, from the plans to the construction materials. Analysis is carried out to ensure ship design will cope with stresses and strains. The ship is inspected, from steelwork to the electrical systems. Any modifications or conversions during her life must also be inspected and approved.  There are a  number of surveys which apply to a ship during her life cycle – construction surveys and maintenance surveys: the latter include hull and machinery surveys, for example hull survey can be annual, intermediate, docking and special; the machinery surveys include boiler, equipment, pumps, generators, engine.

  • Statutory: as well as classification rules there are many international conventions, codes and protocols concerning ship safety and marine pollution stipulated by the UN IMO – International Maritime Organisation. This require the issue of a certificate and Lloyd’s Register is authorised by more than 135 national administration to undertake inspections on their behalf. For example for safety equipment, loadline, radio, passenger safety and tonnage.

  • Consultancy services: Lloyd’s Register offers other marine technical services and provides advice at every stage of a ship’s life – design, construction, operation and disposal. A dedicated Consultancy Services Group also provides fuel and lubricant analysis, help with efficient management of machinery, technical investigation services and a 24-housr emergency response service in the event of casualty/accident.

Lloyd’s Register also provides dedicated training services to its clients in the marine industry.
